Obama: Washington working to protect embassy in Cairo
US president expresses concern about violent protests and political unrest, but says Egyptian people are still finding their way with democracy

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — US President Barack Obama on Saturday said the United States is concerned about protests and political unrest in Egypt. He said the top priority was making sure the US Embassy in Cairo and American consulates are were.
Obama said the US has been in direct contact with Egypt’s government and was planning to ensure American outposts were protected during weekend protests.
Obama said the US supports free speech and free assembly in Egypt, but urged all parties to refrain from violence and called on Egypt’s police and military to show restraint.
He said Egyptians were still finding their way with democracy and there’s been difficulty focusing on core issues like jobs and the cost of living.
Tens of thousands of supporters and opponents of Egypt’s president have been rallying. One American has been killed.
