The Israel Police announced Monday that a Palestinian resident of the West Bank has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killing of a woman whose body was found in a Tel Aviv park ten days ago.

The suspect, 47, lives in Jericho and does not have a permit to be in Israel, police said in a statement after partially lifting a gag order on the case. He was arrested in Israel last week.

The identity of the woman has not yet been determined, police said.

An investigation was opened on July 22 after police received a report of a body found in the Muslim Cemetery on Mishol Emanuel Sela Street in Tel Aviv, part of the city’s Independence Park. Shortly afterward, the suspect was arrested and the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court has extended his custody since, most recently until August 3.

Magen David Adom medics who were called to the scene when the body was found described it as being “totally decayed.” The remains were taken away for forensic examination.

Merav Khoury, an attorney appointed by the public defender’s office to represent the suspect, said in a statement that her client claims he is innocent of the death and that he was the one who notified police about the body.

“The suspect denies any connection to the incident and does not even know who the deceased is,” she said. “It should be expected of police before making the arrest to examine whether it was a murder at all and to try and identify the deceased, and only then to arrest suspects.”
