A 19-year-old border policeman was killed on Wednesday, apparently when a gun held by his comrade was accidentally discharged.

Officials said Cpl. Avi Gronov was shot at a Border Police base near Kibbutz Yad Mordechai in Israel’s south. Initial information pointed to Gronov’s friend discharging a bullet from his weapon, hitting Gronov in the head.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene found Gronov unconscious and in critical condition.

He was evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and he later died of his wounds.

Police said an investigation had been opened into the incident. Gronov left behind his parents and two sisters.
