False alarm in ’emergency situation’ at US Army post

After evacuating Fort Benning personnel, officials determine suspicous vehicle not a threat

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Authorities say the emergency situation at Fort Benning, the US Army post in west Georgia, is close to a resolution, and that it was prompted by concerns about a vehicle.

Fort Benning officials said Wednesday afternoon on the base’s official Facebook account and on Twitter that authorities secured the area and that personnel were evacuated as a precaution.

The posts say that a soldier asked for help with a battery jump. He misidentified part of the electrical system on the vehicle of the person assisting him, according to the posts, and he alerted emergency officials because he thought there was a threat.

But officials on the scene determined there was no threat.
