A man said to be in his 50s was stabbed and left in serious condition Wednesday, apparently after surprising a burglar who had broken into his home.

The man was found in his apartment in the agricultural cooperative community of Elishama, in the Sharon region of the country, northeast of Tel Aviv.

Police investigating the incident said initial indications were that the victim had confronted someone who was trying to rob his home. A fight broke out and the man was stabbed.

Magen David Adom paramedics treated the man at the scene and then took him to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he was sedated and put on life support.

Police were combing the area for suspects.
