German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinction during a meeting with President Shimon Peres in Israel next week.

An official statement issued by the President’s office noted Merkel’s “unwavering commitment to Israel’s security” as well as her “fight against anti-Semitism.”

“Dr. Angela Merkel is an exceptional leader with a deep moral conviction and high ideals, including in her warm relations with the State of Israel and the Jewish people,” the statement read.

“Chancellor Merkel sets a wonderful example on education against anti-Semitism, racism and hate, and works tirelessly to expand the work being done on these issues with the aim of educating future generations in Germany towards equality, tolerance and acceptance of the other,” continued the communique.

According to the President’s office, the Presidential Medal of Distinction is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made unique and outstanding contributions to bettering the world, Israeli society and the State of Israel’s image around the world.

Merkel, who is scheduled to arrive in Israel with her entire cabinet on Tuesday, will hold a meeting with Peres following the ceremony. The two are set to discuss the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, the Iranian nuclear program, and relations between Israel and Germany.
