Several masked gunman shot and killed a Palestinian police officer Tuesday during a raid on a police station in Tuqu, a small village near the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

The attackers fled the scene.

The police officer, Naser Othman Brewish, 23, of Hebron, sustained a bullet wound to the chest and died on the operating table at the Beit Jala governmental hospital, the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

Bethlehem Governor Abudlfattah Hamayel said the incident was under investigation.

According to Ma’an, Hamayel assessed that the attack was linked to a Monday shooting of a local resident by Palestinian Authority police.

The man had died as a result of the shooting, which Hamayel said was “unfortunate.”
