Protesters waving a giant Palestinian flag blocked the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge in California on Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in order to voice their opposition to “oppression.”

The bridge was closed for nearly two hours due to the demonstration, as the protesters held up the massive banner and chanted slogans, according to the California Highway Patrol. The protest was conducted peacefully and no violent incidents were reported.

Sixty-eight people, mostly students from Stanford University, were detained for failing to comply with police orders and evacuating from the scene, ABC7 news reported. They are expected to face charges of disobeying a lawful order of a peace officer and obstructing the free movement of others, California Highway Patrol Officer Daniel Hill told ABC7.
