The body of a security guard was found Saturday at a construction site in Rehovot. The man, identified as Kamel Abu Mor, 34, of Gedera, was shot several times at point blank range.
Multiple gunshots were heard early Saturday morning by residents in the area near the construction site on Chakhnover Street, according to Haaretz.
According to the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency, Abu Mor was a Palestinian who had acquired Israeli citizenship after serving as a collaborator with Israel’s Shin Bet security agency.
Police opened an investigation into the shooting.
Police suspect the Abu Mor was killed amid a fight between rival criminal groups for control of the construction site he was guarding Friday night, Israel Radio reported.
Abu Mor’s murder came amid a wave of gang-related murders and assassination attempts across Israel. Last Saturday, gunmen shot dead a Jaffa man in broad daylight in his car while stopped at a red light in south Tel Aviv.
Earlier this month, police chief Yohanan Danino addressed the phenomenon, acknowledging that mob attacks in the midst of bustling cities were crippling to citizens’ sense of security, and saying he considered them to be a form of “terrorism.”
