TA University climbs global reputation rankings

Tel Aviv University was the only Israeli institution to make it onto the list of the world’s top 200 most reputable schools, according to rankings released by the Times Higher Education on Wednesday.

The coastal city’s university gained 11 spots from last year to place at 188 in the 2015 world reputation rankings.

Jerusalem’s Hebrew University missed the top 200, continuing its several-year slide from a high of 121 in 2012.

It was placed in the 201-225 tier, along with Haifa’s Technion Israel Institute of Technology.

The reputation rankings, a spin-off of the Times Higher Education annual university rankings, are based on a global survey of more than 10,000 senior academics from 142 countries, who were asked to nominate up to 10 universities based on personal experience and knowledge.

Topping the list for a second consecutive year was Harvard University, followed by the United Kingdom’s Cambridge and Oxford.

Last week it was reported that Steve Tisch, a film producer and New York Giants co-owner, donated $10 million to Tel Aviv University to create a film and television school.

Tisch’s gift will allow the university to expand its film and television department to a film school, which will be called the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television.
