An elderly woman died Monday after a fire broke out in her apartment building in the lower Galilee city of Afula, rescue workers said.

Medics from the Magen David Adom emergency services pronounced the woman, believed to be about 70 years old, dead at the scene.

“When we got there, the apartment was engulfed in flames and there was a lot of thick smoke,” said Wissam Zuabi, the deputy in charge of the MDA’s Gilboah district.

“After the fire service put out the fire, we went into the apartment.”

“During our searches, a woman of around 70 was found unconscious. She had no signs of life and all that remained was for us to declare her dead.”

It was not immediate clear what caused the fire.

Meanwhile, a woman and two children were treated after inhaling smoke when a fire broke out in their apartment building in the central Israeli city of Bnei Brak.

Initial reports said the woman jumped from the second floor to escape the flames, while firemen rescued the two children from the third floor.
