JTA — Los Angeles’ Jewish mayor won’t be Washington bound.
Eric Garcetti says he is taking himself out of the running for a job in the Biden administration, Politico reported Thursday. Garcetti was a co-chair of Joe Biden’s campaign and helped select Kamala Harris, a California senator, as Biden’s running mate.
Garcetti, nearing the end of his second term, said he is still needed in his city, as he grapples with the pandemic and with the aftermath of protests against police brutality.
“Joe Biden has told me for the last two years that he was very interested in me coming to Washington, DC, and there were things on the table for me,” Garcetti told Politico. “As the administration reached out to me about serving, I let them know early this week that my city needs me now, and then I want to be here and that I need to be here.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
