Man indicted for twice assaulting his disabled mother, causing brain hemorrhage

State prosecutors file an indictment against a 34-year-old man accused of twice assaulting his bedridden, partially paralyzed mother.

Police arrested the unnamed defendant on August 2 after he allegedly beat his 64-year-old mother to the point where she required hospitalization. Medical staff later found that she had sustained a brain hemorrhage as a result of the attack.

The defendant has a history of violence against his mother, who testified to having been assaulted by her son at an unknown date, in which he caused bleeding in her genital area, prosecutors say.

According to the indictment filed today, the defendant tried to keep his mother’s caregiver out of his parents’ house in Ashkelon by changing the locks.

When the caregiver arrived at the complainant’s home the morning of July 13, she realized she had been locked out and heard the mother shouting her name and crying for help.

The son cursed the caregiver from behind the locked door, refusing to let her in.

The caregiver called the police, who, after failing to convince the defendant to open up, forced their way into the house and arrested him.

He was released a week later, under a 15-day restraining order barring him from entering his parents’ house. But he violated the order in early August when he entered his parents’ home at night, as his father slept in another room.

The defendant punched and kicked his mother, causing her brain to hemorrhage. She also suffered severe bruising, skin-level wounds to her neck and upper chest, breathing difficulties and tremors as a result of the attack, reads the indictment.

The complainant was taken to Ashkelon’s Barzilai Medical Center, where her condition deteriorated further, leading staff to transfer her to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where she was sedated and placed on a ventilator. She was discharged after two weeks of treatment.

The son is charged in the Beersheba District Court with assaulting a helpless person whom he is responsible for, causing severe injury; obstructing a police officer from performing his duty; and violating a court-issued restraining order.
