The Northern Medical Center (Poriya) in Tiberias reports that an 18-month-old baby, unvaccinated against measles, has died from the disease.
This is the tenth death from measles since the start of the outbreak in May. Most of them were healthy children with no underlying illnesses who were not vaccinated against measles.
The infant arrived at the Emergency Department in very severe condition and his condition deteriorated throughout the morning.
He was put on a ventilator, but despite the efforts of medical teams to resuscitate him, doctors pronounced him dead.
Areas currently classified as experiencing a measles outbreak are Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Bnei Brak, Harish, Modi’in Illit, Nof HaGalil, Kiryat Gat, Ashdod, Safed, Netivot, Haifa, Tiberias, the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council, and the settlement of Tekoa.
The Health Ministry reiterates that measles is a disease that is preventable through an effective and safe vaccine.
Seeking medical treatment immediately upon the appearance of symptoms or suspicion of infection “saves lives,” the ministry says.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
