An East Jerusalem resident has been arrested on suspicion of raping an American tourist who was volunteering with him in an orphanage in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, police said Tuesday.
The woman in her 20s told investigators that the suspect came into her room in the orphanage, locked the door, and violently raped her, police said in a statement on Tuesday. After the attack she was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police immediately began searching for the suspect, a 20-year-old East Jerusalem resident, who was living in Bethlehem at the time of the alleged rape and arrested him on Monday.
He appeared in Jerusalem Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday where judges ruled that he will remain in police custody until Thursday.
The court also put out a gag order preventing the publication of the suspect’s identity.
