A 33-year-old man was killed Saturday when his vehicle overturned near a community south of Beersheba. His two children suffered light-to-moderate injuries.
Rami Abu al-Qia’an’s death brought to 18 the number of people killed in road accidents over the past week.
In a tweet Saturday evening, President Isaac Herzog mourned the “18 worlds destroyed for their loved ones within one week.
“It’s appalling. The war against traffic accidents is a war for the lives of us all,” he added, urging citizens to take extra care “while driving, riding and walking in any road and intersection.”
Abu al-Qia’an, a resident of Hura in the Negev, was driving on Route 80 near Har Amasa with his children, aged 12 and 15, when the car overturned for reasons unclear. The three were rushed to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba but the father soon succumbed to his injuries.
His death follows that of 14-year-old Liron Brami early Saturday after she was struck by a car that ran a red light in the central city of Petah Tikva.
Recent days have seen an exceptionally high number of road deaths, with 18 in the past week, 15 of them in the past four days alone.
A total of 364 people were killed in traffic incidents in Israel in 2021.
