A resident of the city of Hadera, 18, was shot dead and two others were lightly injured by gunfire on Saturday night in what police reportedly believe was a criminal underworld hit that went wrong.

The two injured men were both in their early twenties and one of them was the dead man’s brother.

Police suspect that one of those who was lightly injured was the intended target of the shooting, which came against a background of disputes between crime groups, the Ynet website reported. All three men were said to be known to police.

The were treated at the city’s Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, police said, with the 18-year-old initially in critical condition. After efforts to resuscitate him failed, doctors declared him dead.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.

The death came after on Friday a resident of the Shomron region of the West Bank, 23, was stabbed to death in a fight in a parking lot at a beach in the central coastal city of Rishon Lezion.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene and he was taken to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv where doctors declared him dead. Police opened an investigation and hours later the force said it arrested eight suspects, five men and three women, aged 17-22, residents of the cities of Nes Ziona, Ramle, and Lod.

They suspects were all taken in for questioning and were to be brought for a remand hearing on Sunday.

Police were probing whether the suspects were drunk at the time as cups and alcohol bottles were found at the scene of the stabbing, Walla news reported.
