One tenth of the safety shelters in Gush Dan, the central region of Israel which includes Tel Aviv and surrounding cities, contain hazardous levels of toxic gases, according to a survey by the Environmental Protection Ministry.

The survey found that only two shelters, out of 179 examined, did not contain any traces of known carcinogenic or poisonous substances.

Israel Radio reported that local authorities have been instructed by the ministry to ventilate and then complete sealing work on the shelters.

Gush Dan is home to approximately 42 percent of Israel’s population.
