One woman was killed and two other people were injured when a car hit a group of cyclists near the northern city of Harish on Saturday morning, according to police and medics.

Magen David Adom paramedics treated the woman in her 40s but were forced to declare her dead at the scene. Two other cyclists were injured and taken to hospital in Hadera, with one of them in a serious condition.

Police detained the 19-year-old driver for questioning and said they opened an investigation into the traffic incident.

The driver was lightly injured in the crash.

A statement from MDA quoted a medic at the scene describing the sights as “shocking,” and said that medics “arrived at the scene quickly and saw a vehicle with damage to the front end and three cyclists lying on the side of the road.”

“A woman, about 40, was trapped under the vehicle, unconscious, without a pulse and with multiple severe injuries,” the medic said. “During the rescue operations, we performed medical examinations but her injuries were very serious and unfortunately we had to declare her dead at the scene.”

“Two other men who were lying on the road were fully conscious with multiple injuries. We provided them with medical treatment and transported them to the hospital in stable condition,” the medic added.

According to the Or Yarok Association for Safer Driving, 269 people have been killed in road accidents since the beginning of 2025, five more people compared to the same date in 2024, and 2025 is the deadliest year on the roads in about 20 years.

The group’s CEO, Yaniv Yaakov, said after the crash that “cyclists are being dehumanized and there is no safety solution for those who want to ride for pleasure and sport. Cyclists are forced to ride on the public road alongside vehicles, and any slightest mistake could lead to a fatal accident.”

“It doesn’t have to be like this, and safe cycling areas can be created,” he added.

The Israel Bicycle Association said they “mourn the death of the cyclist” killed in Saturday’s crash and added that “hundreds of thousands of cyclists ride every weekend across Israel, and we must protect their safety, so that they can enjoy a safe ride and return home without injury.”
