A woman in her 50s was run over and killed as she was crossing a road in northern Israel on Saturday, police and medics said.

Initial investigations revealed that the woman was crossing Route 89, about 100 meters from Kabri junction in the Western Galilee when she was hit by a minibus.

Medics from the Magen David Adom rescue service said that they found the woman with no signs of life and were forced to declare her dead at the scene.

Police said the woman was not carrying any identifying documents and had yet to be identified.

Police said they had detained the 27-year-old driver of the minibus for questioning.
