Three daycare teachers in southern Israel were arrested Friday after a photo surfaced of a toddler at the school tied up from head to toe and unable to move.
Police arrested the three after the toddler’s grandmother, who posted the photo to Facebook, filed a police complaint saying she found her grandson tied up in cloth diapers on a bed when she visited the daycare in Sderot.
The teachers are suspected of abusing a helpless minor.
As they were questioned by police, the teachers claimed it was a common educational practice in Russia to tie up toddlers in such a way, according to Hebrew media reports.
The boy’s father responded that while it was common to tie up toddlers younger than 1.5-years like that, his son is 20-months-old and therefore the teachers should be severely punished.
“It’s acceptable to wrap them up, not to tie them up,” the father told the Kan public broadcaster.

Parents of other toddlers at the daycare voiced support for the teachers.
“This is a known Caucasian technique. We have no problem with it,” they were quoted saying by the broadcaster.
The father also said his mother suspected something was amiss at the daycare and decided to check up on the school, where she found the toddler tied up.
“On the same day my mother made a surprise visit I understand why my child was crying every morning when he went to daycare. I was simply in shock,” he said. “Today they did this to my child, tomorrow they can do this to many more children.”
Police said they would seek to keep two of the suspects — who manage the daycare — in custody.
