Gal Gadot nearly gave up acting before ‘Wonder Woman’

Israeli actress Gal Gadot revealed in an interview published Wednesday that before landing the part of Wonder Woman she was on the verge of giving up acting to return to Tel Aviv, to study and spend time with her husband and daughter.

Gadot features on the cover of the December issue of the UK edition of the glossy Glamour Magazine, and she told the publication that she was very close to quitting.

“Before I got Wonder Woman, I was thinking about never coming back to Los Angeles, [I thought I’d] stay in Israel, work as an actress here and there, go back to university and do something else,” she said. “Because there had been so many ‘no’s. You go to the audition and you have a callback, then another callback and then a camera set-up, and people are telling you your life will change if you get this part. And then you don’t get it.”

Gadot said that she was fed up with the Hollywood lifestyle and wanted to stay with her husband in Tel Aviv.

“I reached a place where I didn’t want to do that anymore,” she said. “My husband has a lot of work in Tel Aviv, and we had a daughter, so taking them to LA to fish for work put a lot of pressure on me. I was like, ‘Why am I doing this?’ Hearing no, over and over, I was thinking, ‘What am I good for?’ And that’s when I got ‘Wonder Woman.’”

She also told the magazine how lucky she was not to have become a lawyer, which had been her initial plan.

“You convince yourself to do these things… ‘I’ll be a lawyer so I can make peace and people will be able to reach agreements.’ Whereas, in real life, lawyers deal with conflict non-stop. Conflicts are not good for me,” she said. “I’m all about harmony and Zen. So I’m happy it didn’t work out. I would be the shittiest lawyer.”

Earlier this month, Gadot became the first Israeli actress to host Saturday Night Live, which she opened with a monologue recited partially in Hebrew.

The choice of Gadot to host an episode came after “Wonder Woman” proved a box office smash this summer, grossing over $800 million worldwide.

In light of the movie’s success, Gadot has signed up to star in a sequel.

She will also play the character of Wonder Woman in “Justice League,” which is slated to hit theaters in November.
