A 3-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a fire over the weekend died Monday, two days after the blaze took the life of her brother, aged 9.
Doctors at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa declared Hanaan Juhar dead after her condition deteriorated. She had been sedated and on ventilation in the hospital’s intensive care unit since the fire.
Two other siblings, aged 3 and 7, remain hospitalized in a serious condition following the fire at their home in the northern coastal town of Jisr az-Zarqa, on Saturday evening.
Her brother, Ibrahim Ahmed Juhar, who was critically injured, had been taken to the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center where doctors declared him dead.
All of the children suffered burns and from smoke inhalation.
The children’s mother, Etedal, 47, was lightly injured.
Police have opened an investigation into what caused the fire.
An initial probe by the fire department determined that flames started when one of the children was playing with fire in the apartment when their mother was not at home, Walla news reported. When she came home she entered the building and with the help of neighbors was able to contain the fire until rescue services reached the scene.
