Join the Times of Israel Community by Wednesday, December 23, to catch an exclusive Behind the Headlines interview with Israeli pop star and 2018 Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai.

The musician discusses her newest single, a cover of the Bob Dylan classic “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” as well as her popular YouTube series “Netta’s Office.”

The series took a turn after the global pandemic hit, with Barzilai focusing more on releasing music and connecting with viewers. “I needed to feel like a musician, and I needed my fans,” she tells Times of Israel Culture and Lifestyle Editor Jessica Steinberg in the Behind the Headlines interview.

Barzilai doesn’t have your run of the mill pop star background. She spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, where her family lived for four years and where she picked up the rhythms of African lullabies from her local nannies. Barzilai also served in the Israel Defense Forces’ military band, and did a stint at the Rimon School of Music, one of Israel’s most prestigious music schools — though she’s not the only one in her family to go there. One of her brothers studied double bass at Rimon, as well.

She was already adept at her signature looping machine, which lets musicians layer repeating vocal or music tracks in real time, when she walked into the music school. The school’s president, Yehuda Eder, told The Times of Israel in 2018 that Barzilai was a musical talent “who just came and conquered all of us.”
