Ankara summons Vatican envoy over pope’s remarks
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleTurkey summons the Vatican’s envoy to Ankara for clarification after Pope Francis I said the mass killing of Armenian people during World War I constituted the first “genocide” of the 20th century.
Earlier Sunday, the pope called on the international community to recognize the genocides of the 20th century, among which he counted the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, the purges of Stalin’s Soviet Union and the Ottoman genocide.
Modern Turkey, heir to the Ottoman empire, has vehemently resisted defining the Armenian plight as a genocide, and habitually claims the number of the dead (estimated at up to 1.5 million people) is exaggerated.
