Hossam Hassan, the coach of Egypt’s soccer team who has been an outspoken advocate for Palestinians, appeared to spit toward a fan holding an Israeli flag at the team’s recent loss to Argentina at the World Cup.
The video shows Hassan appearing angry as he passes by the fan waving the flag, and then appearing to spit.
Hassan previously waved a Palestinian flag after Egypt’s victory over Australia, and spoke for more than four minutes on the Palestinians ahead of the match with Argentina.
“If there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they are not human — whether they are Arab, European, or American,” Hassan said at the time.
Yesterday, the Egyptian Football Association said it had approved a contract extension for Hassan.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
