Mortar kills 4 in Alawite stronghold Latakia

Four people were killed, children among them, when a mortar shell hit a house in the center of the seaside city of Latakia in Syria. Three civilians were wounded in the attack, Ynet reports.

Latakia is the stronghold of the Alawite minority in Syria, a minority to which the family of President Bashar Assad and the top echelon of army generals also belong.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights meanwhile says battles continue between regime forces and opposition groups, led by the Nusra Front, near the village of Hamidia. The village, near Quneitra, is one of the Syrian settlements closest to the border fence with Israel. Both sides are suffering losses, the Observatory says.
