US President Joe Biden tells Channel 12 news anchor Yonit Levi that he still believes the US should return to the Iran nuclear deal — and that the situation is now in Iran’s hands.

Asked why he believes the deal should be resurrected, Biden says that “the only thing worse than the Iran that exists now is an Iran with nuclear weapons.”

Speaking to the Israeli TV network shortly before he departed Washington for Tel Aviv, Biden says he thinks it was “a gigantic mistake” for former US president Donald Trump to pull out of the deal.

“They’re closer to a nuclear weapon than they were before,” Biden says of Iran, saying that “I still think it makes sense” to rejoin the deal.

“It’s up to Iran now,” he adds.

The full interview will air later this evening.
