Board of Peace envoy urges UN Security Council ‘to use every means at its disposal’ to disarm Hamas

Nickolay Mladenov, who is overseeing the US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, warns the UN Security Council that every act of violence there risks “unraveling” the ceasefire. He says Hamas must accept the roadmap to peace and Israel must uphold its obligations, while calling for the United Nations “to use every means at its disposal” to press the Gaza-ruling Palestinian terror group to disarm.

The high representative for the Board of Peace says the choice before Hamas and Israel is “a deteriorating status quo” or a new beginning for two million Palestinians, now waiting “in desperate conditions.”

“There is no third option,” Mladenov stresses. “There never was, and the people of Gaza should not be made to wait while some pretend there is.”

He goes through the 15 points in the roadmap, stressing that the board is not a substitute for Palestinian governance of Gaza.
