Contrary to UNIFIL claim, IDF says mortars didn’t hit peacekeeper position in southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces responds to UNIFIL after it said earlier that two “possible illuminating flare mortar rounds” struck one of its positions in southern Lebanon overnight.

The IDF says that it was carrying out “routine firing” in the area of Rmaish, near the Israeli border, when it received a request from the UN peacekeeping force to cease firing as one of its posts had been hit, which the military agreed to.

It says, however, that upon an initial examination of the incident, it did not appear that any mortars had hit the UNIFIL post.

“The incident is being investigated,” it says, and reiterates that “the IDF is working to target the terrorist infrastructure of the Hezbollah terror group and is not working to harm UN forces.”
