High Court nixes petitions against Gofman’s appointment as Mossad chief; he’ll enter post Tuesday

The High Court of Justice rejects, by a vote of two to one, petitions calling for government’s appointment of Roman Gofman as the new head of the Mossad to be annulled.

The court determines that although there were failures with how Gofman handled a controversial incident in 2022 when he was commander of the IDF’s 210th Division, his conduct did not cast doubt on his ethical conduct to the extent that it would invalidate him from serving as Mossad chief.

The court also states that although the manner in which the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee — which recommended Gofman be appointed — was not optimal, its review of Gofman’s candidacy was not fundamentally flawed enough to justify invalidating Gofman’s appointment.

Justice Daphne Barak Erez was of the minority opinion, maintaining that the committee should further review the problematic manner in which Gofman handled the incident in question.

With the petitions against his appointment nixed, Gofman is set to take up the position of Mossad chief on Tuesday.
