Iran reportedly tells US it will only agree to halt uranium enrichment for 5 years

After the US asked Iran to suspend uranium enrichment for 20 years during the talks in Islamabad, Tehran submitted a formal response on Monday saying it will only agree to do so for five years, according to the New York Times, which quotes a pair of senior Iranian officials and a US official.

The US official says President Donald Trump rejected the proposal, adding that Iran is also rebuffing American requests to remove its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Though the Iranians reportedly said they would dilute the enriched material, they could reverse that step at a later date and again enrich it to weapons-grade.

The officials quoted by the New York Times also says talks are being held on another round of face-to-face talks but no plans have been made.
