The US military was some three hours away from launching strikes on Iran yesterday when US President Donald Trump called them off, claiming an agreement to end the war had been reached and would soon be signed, NBC News reports.
At the time of Trump’s announcement, the US military had already selected its targets, and the US Navy had already adjusted its operational plans and readied munitions for the strikes, NBC says.
Had they gone ahead, the strikes would have been similar to those carried out by the US the two previous nights, the report says, adding that despite Trump’s claim that the US would soon be “taking” Iran’s Kharg Island, it was not on the list of targets.
It adds that the president’s about-face and abrupt decision to call off the strikes left the military “confused.”
