UN chief urges ‘maximum restraint’ in Gaza flare-up
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleUN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appeals for “maximum restraint” amid a violent flare-up between Israel and terrorist groups in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip that is showing no signs of stopping.
“He condemns in the strongest terms the launching of rockets from Gaza into Israel, particularly the targeting of civilian population centers,” a UN statement says.
“He urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate and return to the understandings of the past few months,” it says.
Guterres’s special envoy to the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov is “working closely with Egypt and all concerned to restore calm,” the statement says.
