US President Donald Trump was photographed during a Wednesday White House session with the survivors of a Florida high school mass shooting holding handwritten notes bearing his message to the families “I hear you.”
Also legible on the note card were the questions “what would you most want me to know about your experience?” “what can we do to make you feel safe” and “ideas?”
Social media lit up with criticism of Trump’s apparent need for help in sounding compassionate to people who are suffering.
The closeup picture of the card also showed that the president had 45 embroidered onto his shirt cuff.

In the meeting, Trump suggested arming teachers to deter mass shootings as he faced broken voices, tears and demands for action from the survivors.
Trump also promised “very strong” background checks on gun owners during Wednesday’s poignant “listening session” in which he heard firsthand accounts from bereaved parents and friends, and schoolchildren who narrowly escaped with their own lives.
The televised White House meeting came as students staged street protests across the country to demand stricter gun laws following the murder of 14 teens and three teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
