NEW YORK (JTA) — A Brooklyn synagogue won a $250,000 grant for preservation through an online voting contest.
Congregation Beth Elohim tallied the second highest number of votes in the American Express Partners in Preservation program, which was run in conjunction with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The synagogue was among the 40 New York locations selected to compete for $3 million in American Express prize money, including the Guggenheim Museum and the Brooklyn Public Library, which placed first.
Beth Elohim, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, was the only synagogue to make it to the final voting phase and won the maximum monetary prize possible through public voting, which was open online daily for more than three weeks.
The money will be used toward the restoration of a stained glass window.
