A man was sentenced Monday to 17 years in jail for breaking into a home last June in the northern city of Haifa and raping a 10-year-old girl who was asleep in her bedroom.

Shahar Rimoni, 22, was convicted of rape, sodomy, abusing a minor and breaking into a residence. He has confessed to the crimes.

Rimoni was also sentenced to one-year probation and ordered to pay NIS 100,000 (approximately $31,000) in compensation.

Michal Carmel and Yael Tov-El, the attorneys representing the girl, welcomed the sentencing but said the family had hoped for a more severe punishment of at least 20 years because “the defendant attacked a girl inside her home, in the safest place.”

“This is one of the most shocking crimes in the history of the State of Israel, an event that damaged every parent in the country’s sense of personal security and that of everyone who lives in the city of Haifa,” the attorneys said in a statement. “The family thanks the Israel Police for the quick solving [of the case] and hopes that the sentence will keep this monster away from the public and their daughter for a long time.”

Hagit Pe’er of the Na’amat women’s group said that the crime had caused untold damage to the victim.

“This is a man who murdered a girl’s soul — there is no punishment under the law that is heavy enough for such an act,” Pe’er told Walla.

Rimoni has not yet decided if he will appeal, his lawyers said.

According to the indictment, Rimoni noticed the window of an apartment window open in June last year, and decided to break in to carry out a burglary.

He removed mosquito netting from the window, and entered the apartment’s kitchen, took a knife out of a drawer and used it to pry open locked closets in a search for valuables, according to the indictment.

Rimoni then noticed a set of car keys hanging on a rack and decided to steal the family’s vehicle, went to the street and located it, but changed his mind due to fears of setting off an alarm and returned to the apartment.

He then searched the apartment further and found the girl sleeping in her room and assaulted her.

Evidence against Rimoni included DNA found at the scene, statements he made, and statements the girl made to a special investigator.

Rimoni was adopted by a Haifa couple from an orphanage in Belarus as a toddler and was said to have been troubled, Channel 12 news reported. He was known to the police for property and drug crimes, Hebrew-language media reported.

Separately, two men were arrested on Sunday evening on suspicion of raping a woman from the town of Caesarea. Police said the suspects, aged 55 and 59, were from the nearby city of Hadera. The two were set to appear in court on Monday for a hearing on their detention.
