Israel orphans of 10/7 are rebuilding their childhood, one hero at a time
Rebuilding childhood after October 7 through play therapy, trauma care, and community support—so orphaned children can heal, feel safe again, and rediscover joy together.
In the aftermath of October 7, much of the world focused on the immediate devastation. Less visible, but no less profound, is the quiet crisis facing the youngest survivors—children who lost one or both parents in a single day. Their grief is complex, long-lasting, and often invisible. For these children, trauma does not end when the headlines fade.
Israel Orphans of 10/7 is an organization dedicated exclusively to the long-term healing of children orphaned by the October 7 attacks and the ongoing war. From the very beginning, the organization recognized that rebuilding homes and communities was not enough. Childhood itself needed to be rebuilt.
At the heart of the organization’s mission is Israel’s first and only Play Therapy Center created specifically for children orphaned on or since October 7. The center was intentionally designed to feel nothing like a clinic. There are no desks, no examinations, and no “therapy sessions” as children might imagine them. Instead, children arrive to a space that feels safe, warm, and familiar, where healing happens through play-based therapies including art therapy, cooking therapy, dog therapy, horse therapy, and other experiential modalities.
Each activity is intentionally designed to help children process trauma, regulate their emotions, and rebuild a sense of safety; without ever feeling clinical or forced. To the children, it feels like play. In reality, every interaction is therapeutic. All services are delivered by licensed clinicians. They help the children process grief in a way that feels natural and non-threatening. Children are never told they are “in therapy.” Instead, healing happens organically, at a pace their nervous systems can tolerate.
The results have been profound. Children who initially arrived withdrawn, fearful, or non-verbal are beginning to re-engage with the world; expressing emotions, forming attachments, and rediscovering joy. These outcomes have made it clear that play is not a luxury for traumatized children, but a clinical necessity.
Alongside therapeutic care, Israel Orphans of 10/7 provides monthly financial stipends to families suddenly navigating life as single-parent or guardian-led households. These stipends help stabilize daily life so that children can focus on healing rather than survival. Together, financial support and therapeutic intervention create a foundation for long-term recovery.
Because of the extraordinary impact of the Play Therapy Center, the organization is now working toward expanding this model. Two additional therapy hubs are planned for next year, with the long-term goal of reaching every child orphaned by October 7 and future acts of terror. Expansion is not aspirational; it is necessary. And it is only possible through community support. Donations directly fund licensed clinicians, therapeutic tools, and safe spaces where children can heal. This December, Israel Orphans of 10/7 is launching Healing Our Heroes, a two-week hero-themed crowdfunding campaign that highlights the widows, orphans, and young survivors whose resilience defines this moment in Jewish history. The campaign aims to raise $1.5 million to expand play therapy centers and sustain trauma-informed care for years to come.
Every family impacted by October 7 carries both devastating loss and extraordinary strength. Healing Our Heroes offers the global Jewish community a tangible way to stand with these children—not only in remembrance, but in action. Israel Orphans of 10/7 exists to ensure no child walks the long road of trauma alone. As Israel rebuilds, this organization is rebuilding something even more fragile: childhood itself.
