Levin decries ‘illegal’ High Court order to convene Judicial Selection Committee to appoint judges

Justice Minister Yariv Levin dismisses as illegal today’s High Court of Justice ruling ordering him to convene the Judicial Selection Committee in order to appoint judges to district courts, accusing the justices of creating a “constitutional crisis.”
Levin has refused to convene the committee and fill these positions since January 2025, creating a severe dearth of judges on courts around the country.
“This is an illegal decision on its face, in which the judiciary is taking over the Judicial Selection Committee, in explicit violation of the provisions of the law,” Levin claims, arguing that if the justices wish to set the dates for Judicial Selection Committee meetings then they should “take off their judge’s robe, run for the Knesset, try to get elected, and in negotiations leading up to the formation of the government demand the justice portfolio.”
“Three judges have single-handedly created an unprecedented constitutional crisis, and all responsibility lies with them,” Levin insists.
