Tzipi Livni has become the latest high-profile Israeli former official to join a medical cannabis firm, it was announced Thursday.

The ex-foreign minister, who quit politics in 2019, has joined Cantek as an external strategic adviser, the company said.

The firm, involved in the cultivation and distribution of cannabis, is currently nearing completion of the process of obtaining the licenses needed for growing, marketing and distributing medical marijuana, Channel 12 news reported.

“The company’s vision is gaining momentum, and the ties with Tzipi Livni will lead the company to realize the strategy of turning Cantek into an international company,” said CEO Netsah Israel.

Israel is known as a pioneer in cannabis research. Hebrew University’s Prof. Raphael Mechoulam kickstarted the field in 1964 when he discovered tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis.

But Livni is not the first, and probably not the last, high profile Israeli former official to take the weed dollar.

Upon leaving the joint after serving 16 months in prison for bribery, former prime minister Ehud Olmert joined medical cannabis firm Univo Pharmaceuticals Ltd as an investor and adviser.

Former prime minister Ehud Barak was appointed chairman of one of Israel’s biggest medical cannabis firms to lead its global growth strategy, and former Israel Police commissioner Yohanan Danino was appointed chairman of Together Pharma.
