Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel announces she will resign from her position in government after the Knesset passed a law banning the arrest and prosecution of Haredi draft dodgers.
Haskel, who entered the Knesset as a lawmaker for New Hope, a center-right party that later joined the current government, refused to vote with the coalition for the law, which reinforces continued mass non-enlistment among Haredi men for a several-month period.
Announcing her resignation, Haskel says the newly passed legislation “harms national security, [IDF] servicemembers and those who for three years now have been fighting on the frontlines for our sake and the country.”
“I feel that I cannot give backing to a government that harms national security during wartime,” she continues.
The law grants tens of thousands of Haredi draft evaders immunity from arrest until November 30, and extends that protection to those who become eligible for military service after it takes effect, effectively eliminating the threat of arrest and making it easier to refuse to enlist during that period.
It also suspends ongoing criminal proceedings against those already facing enforcement measures.
