The Fire and Rescue service says it is evacuating motorists stranded by fires that threaten the Route 1 highway amid a series of wildfires.

The service says there is “a real danger” at the scene and that 119 teams and 10 aircraft are working to battle the fire.

An additional 22 teams are on their way to the area.

Nine people have been rescued so far from vehicles that were engulfed in smoke. Four vehicles have caught fire, but no occupants are trapped, the service says.

Several people have been lightly injured from smoke inhalation, the service says.
