Greek prosecutors have ordered provisional terrorism charges against a Gaza Palestinian who police say had ordered explosives on the internet and been trained by Hamas, according to local reports.
The 37-year-old suspect, who was detained on Saturday on the island of Crete, faces charges of membership in a terrorist organization and training to make and use explosives for terrorist acts, the ANA news agency reports.
Greek media say the man, who was working as an electrician in a Crete hotel, may have planned an attack on an Israeli cruise ship expected to stop at the island tomorrow.
Greek police say in statements that the suspect is “linked to individuals recently arrested in Cyprus for terrorism-related offenses” and that he “received training” from Hamas and had “ordered explosives online.”
ERT public television says the man rented an apartment in Athens where police have found laboratory equipment and chemical products that could be used in a bomb.
The man was trained in Malaysia with one of the suspects detained in Cyprus, according to ANA.
The suspect has been ordered to appear before an investigating magistrate who will decide any formal charges.
