IDF said to back Gaza seaport, while PM and Ya’alon oppose

The IDF brass is in favor of the construction of a seaport for the Gaza Strip, but Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon are opposed, according to Israeli daily Haaretz.

A discussion on the issue over the past few weeks has been sparked by “deteriorating economic conditions in the Gaza Strip [and] the desire to seek long-term solutions that would help improve the situation and reduce the danger of a new outbreak of conflict with Hamas,” Haaretz says.

The report list several proposals, among them placing the port in the Al-Arish area of Egypt’s Sinai, construction of an artificial port off the Gaza shoreline, building the port on the Gaza coast itself, and “earmarking quays in Cyprus or Ashdod for Gaza-bound shipments.”
