PA: Smotrich partly canceling Hebron accord is ‘unacceptable’ and a ‘violation’

The office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemns Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s announcement that he has canceled part of the Hebron Agreement and given Israel planning and construction authority in the area of the city containing its Jewish settlement and Tomb of the Patriarchs holy site.

In a statement, the presidency says it “warns against the step announced by one of the ministers in the right-wing government and views this measure as harmful to the political and legal status of the city of Hebron and to the signed agreements concerning it.”

The statement adds that “such unilateral measures are unacceptable and constitute a violation of the agreements signed by the Israeli side, as well as international law.”

The PA presidency calls on the international community, and particularly the US, to intervene immediately to stop what it describes as “this most dangerous step.”
