Report claims at least 12,000 dead in Iran, in ‘largest killing in Iran’s modern history’

Iranian opposition website Iran International claims at least 12,000 people have been killed by the regime in protests in recent days, in “the largest killing in Iran’s modern history.”
That number is far above the most commonly reported estimates so far, which currently put the toll at several hundred.
It says the information is based on multiple sources, with the killings carried out mostly by the Revolutionary Guards and Basij forces on the orders of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, mainly on the nights of January 8-9. It says the killings were organized and not “unplanned” or the result of “scattered clashes.” It says the death toll is the estimate held by Iran’s own security authorities.
It says it compiled and cross-referenced the information from multiple sources, including a source close to the Supreme National Security Council and the Iranian presidential office, as well as sources in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, witness accounts and information from medical officials.
“This data was examined and verified through multiple stages and in accordance with strict professional standards before being announced,” it says, adding that most victims were under 30.
