Israeli security officials suspect that Hamas has recently managed to track visits by senior government and military figures to the Gaza border area, Haaretz reports.
Fire from Gaza on kibbutzim during visits by officials has sparked the concern. Chief of Staff Benny Gantz was in Kibbutz Nahal Oz Friday when mortars were fired, one killing 4-year-old Daniel Tragerman. Mortars were fired at another kibbutz Saturday when Sami Turgeman, head of the Southern Command, was there. A visit by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon to Nahal Oz was cancelled at the last minute when Hamas fired on the kibbutz as his security detail was getting into position.
IDF officers say Hamas is tracking military movements on the border, and might be able to detect when special security details come through. Social media, official announcements, and media reports might also serve as important sources of intelligence for Hamas.
Hamas is working hard to strike a senior Israeli official as a moral victory, after Israel managed to kill top Hamas commanders in the past week.
