A senior government official reportedly suggests that the recent High Court order for the Knesset to hold a repeat vote for state comptroller will hand future oppositions a tool to sabotage future secret ballots held among lawmakers, including elections for president.
The remark comes as coalition members have urged defying the court order, which was issued due to several Likud lawmakers having publicly documented their vote for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s personal lawyer Michael Rabello, thus violating the vote secrecy.
“It’s amazing that the High Court justices don’t understand the ramifications of this ruling,” the unnamed government official is quoted as saying by the Kan public broadcaster.
“If we are in the opposition, we intend to disrupt every secret ballot, election for state comptroller or election for president. We will violate the [vote] secrecy and demand that the High Court annul the results, as decided by the High Court, and then we’ll see how they deal with it.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
