Central Elections Committee judge Noam Sohlberg gives the go ahead for National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to take part in an event for police volunteers tonight, after the minister promises not to use the appearance for campaign purposes.

A petition had been filed seeking to block Ben Gvir from taking part in the Tel Aviv confab, citing concerns that he would misuse his official position to stump for electoral support.

In his decision, Sohlberg, a Supreme Court justice tasked with adjudicating campaign disputes, notes that “Minister Ben Gvir committed, including with an affidavit, not to deliver a campaign speech at the event at issue in the petition.”

Sohlberg also recommends that Ben Gvir submit a draft of his speech to legal advisers to ensure it complies, but does not require that he do so.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara had partially backed the petition, submitting an opinion that Ben Gvir be allowed to attend the event but not deliver an address.
