IDF: Shooting incident south of Jerusalem was troops firing at vehicle speeding toward them

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent

The army says the shooting incident near the Beitar checkpoint was troops opening fire at a vehicle that had accelerated toward them.

According to the IDF, the vehicle was being used to smuggle West Bank Palestinians into Israel illegally.

After it crossed the checkpoint into Israel and accelerated toward troops, the soldiers returned fire, the military says.

The vehicle then fled the scene, and the incident is now being handled by police, the army adds.

No injuries were caused.
